Throughout his career, Julian worked in a variety of media, including oil paints, watercolors, and pastels. He is best known for his landscape paintings featuring the Texas Hill Country and its wildflowers. His paintings capture the texture of the land, the light of the sun, and the vibrant colors of the flowers.

Onderdonk’s work was exhibited in prestigious institutions across the United States, including the National Academy of Design, the Corcoran Gallery, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was awarded the silver medal at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915.
